The vigorous sloe is easy to multiply
The offspring of the blackthorn is unproblematic and also succeeds garden beginners. Propagation is often even easier than mastering the root shoots of a blackthorn planted rootless plague.
A shrub is enough to bring in a number of sloes
If you need a lot of sloe as you plan to plant a nearly impenetrable hedge, you can use many small sloes from a mother plant in no time. Bear in mind, however, that the blackthorn grows just 20 centimeters per year and it will take some time for the plot boundary to reach the desired density and height.
You can see the blackthorn by:
uncomplicated self-propagate.
Offspring from seeds
Although germination requires a bit of patience, the blackthorn can be reproduced reliably from the fruits. Collect some ripe sloe fruits in autumn and remove them completely from the pulp. Store the relatively large stones in the refrigerator during the winter and sow them in early spring. Alternatively, you can overwinter the seeds buried in soil or sand outdoors.
Propagation by cuttings
Cut sections of the one year old rods, which should be about twenty inches long, between November and February. The tail of the cuttings must show a bud so that reliably develops a new plant from the plywood. During the winter months, store the seedlings in a cool, frost-free room. In the spring, the sticks are placed vertically at the desired location in the ground and watered regularly. This method is suitable both for planting a whole Schlehe hedge and for growing a sloe bonsai, which you can shape after the expulsion to the attractive miniature schleif.
Propagation by sinkers
Bend one of the outer branches of the mother plant to the ground and complain with a sufficiently large stone. If enough roots have formed on the sinker after a few weeks, you can dig it up and put it into action.
Propagation by Wurzelausläufer
Like the vinegar tree, the blackthorn also forms subterranean foothills from which new seedlings subsequently form. Separate these and transplant the small blackthorn to the desired location.
Tips & Tricks
The root spur of the blackthorn can grow up to ten meters long. A 50 cm deep concrete root barrier is therefore highly recommended in the home garden.
