Checkerboard flowers occur wild on unshaded wet meadows in nature reserves. Therefore, plant the pretty chess flower in the home garden in a full sun to partial shade. The soil should be evenly moist, sandy-loamy and not too nutritious all year round. Even if the bulb has taken its leaves during the summer months, the soil should never dry out completely.
