The Phacelia has experienced a veritable boom in the gardens of Europe in recent years, and not without reason: after all, it is not only an attractive ornamental plant with a perennial flowering period, but also a valuable bee pasture and green manure plant.
Select the right type and pack size
Most subspecies of this plant also called "bee lover" flower light blue to purple-bluish. There are differences in plant height, which is somewhat lower, for example, in the variety Phacelia purshii than in the widespread variety Phacelia tanacetifolia. With regard to the location and the respective substrate, not much can usually be done wrong, as long as the plants get enough sunlight. The bee lover is not without reason as a soil conditioner and green manure, so even hard and stony soils can serve as acreage. For an area of around 50 square meters, 200 grams of Phacelia seeds are generally sufficient. However, packages of up to 1 kilogram are also offered for private gardeners because the seeds remain germinable for a relatively long time and can thus be flexibly seeded at already faded spots.
The phacelia in the garden of the beekeeper
Not only is beekeeping popular among beekeepers because each of their single flowers can produce an amazing amount of nectar for the bees during flowering. Depending on the location and season, after sowing the seeds it only takes about 5 to 7 weeks until the first flowers open. Thus, even months such as August and September, when only a few plants that are interesting for the bees bloom, can be equipped with an additional feed supply for the diligent nectar collectors. In addition, Phacelia, which is basically one-year old, can be successfully permanently seeded in the garden via self-seed sowing if the plant is not affected by high-growth weeds.
Seize the seeds uncomplicated
The Phacelia seed is very fine, so sowing and dosing by hand can be a bit tricky. For a better distribution of the seeds, it may therefore be useful to mix the seeds with plenty of fine sand.
Tips
Since the Phacelia is one of the dark sprouts, the seed should necessarily be easily grounded after the application and watered immediately.
