How to grow rosemary
The popular rosemary spice comes originally from the warm countries of the Mediterranean coast. With a little care, the plant can also breed in Germany, with a cultivation in a pot is recommended. There are countless varieties of rosemary, but for the most part are not hardy and therefore belong to the house over the winter.
Pull rosemary from seeds
Growing rosemary from seeds is quite a complicated affair. The fine seeds do not germinate very reliably, in addition they are quite in need of care. The seeds are spread between March and April in fine, mixed with sand and previously moistened potting soil. The culture container should be covered with glass or a transparent foil and placed in a light and warm place. The seedlings should remain in the pot in the first year and only in the following year - if it is a hardy variety - are planted in the garden.
Grow rosemary from cuttings
By contrast, breeding rosemary from cuttings is much easier. For this purpose, cut about 10 centimeters long, young and still green shoots from the mother plant. Then remove all leaves from the lower half and dip them into a rooting hormone. Plant the shoot in a pot with a sand-soil mixture and keep the substrate moist. The pot finds its place in a bright and warm location. The roots form after about four to six weeks. Slightly slower but also more promising is the breeding by lowering. This remains, in contrast to Steckling, connected to the formation of the roots of the mother plant.
Maintain rosemary
Rosemary thrives best in a well-drained, lean, dry and calcareous soil. Plant the herb a little higher - for example, on a small hill - so that the water can drain better, because waterlogging is deadly for the drought-loving plant. In addition, rosemary prefers a sunny and protected location, the plant is hardy only in exceptional cases. Do not pour very well - as soon as the needles fall off, they are definitely wrong. Whether too little or too much, you have to judge by the roots. Rotting roots indicate waterlogging and thus too much water.
Tips & Tricks
Newly bred young plants should not be harvested in the first year or only slightly. Only with the older rosemary is the regular pruning of the plant care by removing old and woody parts and thus stimulating the fresh shoot growth.
