Roses dry in the traditional way: air-drying or in the oven
Probably the most common method of preserving roses is air drying. To do this, tie the roses into a bunch, wrap the stems tightly with a rubber band and hang the flowers upside down in a dark, warm and dry place. For example, rooms such as a boiler room or a dark loft are ideal. The roses remain hanging for several weeks until they are completely dried. But beware: In this condition, the bouquets are quite crumbly and break apart quickly. If you want to dry the roses faster, you can do so in the oven - put the flowers individually on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and let them dry for several hours at temperatures between 50 and 80 ° C.
Preserve roses after drying
To increase the shelf life of the dried roses, you can then spray them all around with hairspray. This not only has the advantage that the flowers do not crumble so quickly, dust does not stick to it too much or the roses can be better cleaned. However, this procedure is only recommended for plants that are purely decorative - and not for the kitchen! - to be used.
Dry rose petals for potpourris or for the kitchen
Rose blossoms for potpourris or for use in the kitchen should be dried very gently and with a lot of tact. Here you can conserve the flowers both in the air and in the oven, the individual sheets must be carefully and airily spread - either on a clean surface (such as a cloth) or on the lined with baking paper baking sheet. The pure drying succeeds quite uncomplicated, but has a disadvantage: the colors of the flower fade strongly. However, the best way to preserve roses for eternity is glycerine. For this, mix liquid glycerine with water and place the fresh roses (of course cut diagonally on the stems!) Into it. The flowers will be soaked with the glycerin water and so preserved. They are ready as soon as small droplets emerge from the petals. In this way, the roses are just as nicely preserved as if they were actually fresh from the garden into the vase - you just have to dust them off from time to time.
Tips
In the craft shop, ask for colored and reusable salt to dry - the color of which you can see how far the drying process is already advanced or even finished. The lighter the color, the more moisture the special salt has absorbed. In the oven, you can dry the salt after use and then store it for its next use.
