Plant zinnias - that's what matters

Zinnia, with its brightly colored flower heads, adorns borders, full-leafed beds and is ideal as a gap filler between attractive grasses. Since the easy-to-maintain plants in our latitudes only thrive for one year, they have to be planted anew each year. How you should do this, we have compactly summarized here for you.

The planting time

As soon as the ice saints no longer threaten night frosts, you can set the zinnia outdoors, no matter whether it is self-grown plants or perennials from the garden center.

The right location

The Zinnia is an absolute sun-worshiper who does not mind midday temperatures of over thirty degrees. Ideal for this reason is a full sun, which is protected from the wind.

The soil claims

Zinnias are relatively undemanding and thrive in their natural habitat on very stony and barren surfaces. Permeable, humus rich and slightly loamy substrates provide abundant flowering throughout the summer. The optimal pH of the soil is between 5.8 and 6.2.

Note planting distance

So that the Zinnias do not dispute each other's place, you should keep a distance of about thirty centimeters to the neighboring plant, depending on the size of the adult plant.

First, carefully remove the root ball from the culture container and place it in water for about thirty minutes. During this time, lift out the planting hole, which should always be a little larger than the original pot. Make sure that the roots are not kinked and fit well in the planting pit. Fill the planting hole with soil, lightly press it on and pour the zinnia full.

As zinnias are quite sensitive to waterlogging, it is advisable to incorporate some sand into the substrate in soils containing a lot of clay, and to additionally apply a drainage layer of gravel.

Zinnias multiply and prefer

You can either purchase zinnia seeds from the garden shop or harvest them yourself. Starting in February, you can prefer the Zinnias in the house or in a heated greenhouse. Zinnias are dark germs, so cover the seeds placed in the seed trays with a little soil. Well-groomed and covered with a hood show the first seedlings after about ten days.

Alternatively, you can sow Zinnia directly after the icy saints in the garden.

Tips

If properly planted, the zinnia already blooms shortly after its onset until autumn. Cut out withered flowers regularly, this stimulates the flower regeneration.
