Real Rose of Jericho: Warm water speeds up resuscitation
The Rose of Jericho (Anastatica hierochuntica) - also known as desert rose or Marienrose - is a one-year, at most ten inches high alert desert plant. It is especially widespread in North Africa and in the Arabian Peninsula. There are numerous myths surrounding the Jerichorose, but the dried-up-looking plant can seemingly revive again and again. There is a special reason for that.
Why the rose of Jericho "revived"
In their home countries blooms the rather inconspicuous looking Rose of Jericho in the months of March to April, after which form numerous pods with 1.5 millimeters of tiny seeds in it. To protect these seeds from the hot desert sun and thus from dehydration, the dying plant curls up - and unfolds again as soon as it rains. However, this is not a real "resurrection", but merely a physical process.
"Revive" dried desert rose
This "revival" can be followed at home by placing the well-dried plant in a bowl of cold water. With warm or hot water, the unfolding of the leaves takes place much faster, but it damages the Jerichorose. As a result, resuscitation can not be repeated indefinitely (as with cold water), but only a few times.
Tips
Do not leave the rose of Jericho in the water for more than a week, otherwise it will be moldy. Then dry well and let it rest for at least three months.
