For friends of hearty cuisine, it is always worthwhile to grow radish in your own garden. The root vegetable tastes fresh and crunchy, gives the salads a pleasant sharpness and is a good companion to beer, not only in Bavaria.

The planting time depends on whether you want to grow summer or winter radishes. The summer radishes are sown very early in the year, some varieties already from February. The sowing can take place under cold temperatures first under foil or fleece or into the cold frame.
It is possible to put the plants in the greenhouse or on the windowsill of a bright and cool room. The seedlings are planted outdoors after 10-14 days. The winter radishes for the autumn harvest are sown from June directly into the field. The sowing of the late varieties can be done until September.
How is radish sown?
The seeds are spread in 2-3 cm deep furrows, with the row and seed spacing may be between 15 and 40 cm depending on the variety. Since the different radish varieties differ mainly in shape and size, the information on the seed bag must be observed when sowing. In the case of particularly large breeds, it is important that the soil is well loosened at the appropriate depth, so that the fruits can grow unhindered and the tubers do not deform.
What location and soil does radish need?
Sunny location with nutrient-rich soil fertilized for pre-planting is particularly suitable for growing radish. The soil should not be too loose, so it can be kept evenly moist. Regular watering during rearing and ripening is important so that the tubers do not burst and the fruit does not furry.
For the cultivation of radish applies in terms of fresh organic fertilization: less is more. Otherwise, the radish reacts with increased pest and disease infestation. Also sparingly one should deal with nitrogen. Radish thrives well in the neighborhood with tomatoes, beans, carrots, spinach and parsley. The planting should be avoided next to other cruciferous plants and next to cucumbers.
When can you harvest radish?
The harvest time also depends on which variety you have chosen. The summer radishes are harvestable about 8-10 weeks after sowing and should be successively harvested and consumed within two to three weeks. The winter radishes need about 13-15 weeks to maturity. If possible, they should ripen on the bed until the first frost. The winter varieties are usually storable and can be stored in a cool place in crates of sand.
