Bleeding heart can overwinter outdoors
Bleeding Heart, Flaming Heart, Heart Flower - Dicentra spectabilis (sometimes called Lamprocapnos spectabilis) is a long-time cultivated in peasant and ornamental gardens, perennial with very showy, two-tone flowers. Although the plant originating from Northeast Asia is very susceptible to frost, it can easily overwinter outdoors.
Perennial retreats in the summer
Although the Bleeding Heart is not directly hardy, it still does not need to be dug out of the garden in the fall and wintered under sheltered conditions. The reason for this lies in the peculiarity of the perennial, after the flowering time almost completely withdraw to the subterranean rhizome and there - protected by the soil layer - survive the winter. Only the tender sprouts in the spring require additional protection, so that they do not freeze in the late frosts.
Bleeding heart in the bucket
The situation is different with the specimens cultivated in planters. These should overwinter outdoors either under cold conditions (i.e., in a cool but frost-free location) or wrapped with an insulating material (e.g., bast mats or fleece).
Tips
Since the plant retreats in time, pruning to prepare for the winter is not necessary.
