Advantages and disadvantages of the materials for lawn edging stones
Every material has its advantages and disadvantages. Stones are very durable and have a very decorative effect, as they are available in many different colors and shapes. The paving is complex and inexpensive stones are not necessarily. If you put paving stones instead of granite stones it will be a bit cheaper.
Profiles made of metal or aluminum are also weather-resistant. They do not fit every garden style. They are quite easy to move. Aluminum profiles are cheaper than metal profiles, but they do not last that long.

Planning and preparation of the lawn edge
If you want to pave a grassy edge, you should first draw a plan of how the edge should run later. You can pull them straight or build in playful waves and curves.
Mark the course of the planned lawn edge. If you want to draw a straight edge, work with a string. When rounding, cut a template out of cardboard to make it beautifully even.
Then measure how many meters the lawn edge will be long. Calculate how many paving stones or other lawn edging stones you need.
Place lawn edging stones in sand or concrete
If you want to set granite or paving stones as a lawn edge, you have two options. Either you provide a foundation of gravel and sand or a concrete base. Only on very dense soils can be dispensed with a special substrate.
For flat lawns that touch beds or sidewalks, a pad of sand or gravel is sufficient. If you want to set the lawn off the driveway through the lawn edge or if the lawn is on a sloping surface, you should prefer to cast in the paving stones or granite boulders. The lawn edge then serves as a fixture and secures the surface against slipping off.
Instructions how to set the lawn edge properly
If you want to make the grassy edge yourself, lift a small ditch along the desired edge. It should be so deep that you can put in a foundation and the paving stones or granite stones protrude two to three centimeters above the ground.
Fill the substrate with a layer of gravel or sand and tap the foundation firmly. Then the stones are inserted and hammered with a rubber hammer or a special plaster hammer.
Then refill the soil on both sides of the stones and stamp them firmly. For horizontal grass edges, use the spirit level to check that the edge is aligned correctly. Then do the Wackelprobe. If the lawn edge is stuck, you have done everything right.
Allow lawn edge stones to be embedded in concrete
Paving lawn edging stones in concrete is a laborious task requiring a lot of know-how. Do not know this well, you should not do this work yourself, but have it done by a gardener.
This will save you a lot of trouble later, because the lawn edge then sits properly and you do not have to constantly improve, because the stones slip or sink into the ground.
Lawn edges made of metal, aluminum, plastic or wood
You can easily set lawn edges made of these materials yourself. All you have to do is lift out slits or small ditches along the lawn and stick the profiles or wooden palisades in the ground.
As you wish, the lawn edges are raised at ground level or raised two to three centimeters into the ground. A ground-level installation later facilitates the mowing of the lawn edge.
For higher edges, you must cut the lawn edges with a lawn trimmer or secateurs.
Tips & Tricks
If you lay grass edge stones, you should create at least two rows, in which the stones, profiles or wooden palisades offset introduced. This will prevent the grass roots from slipping through the gaps in the lawn edge.
