Autumn is the long-awaited harvest season
Physalis have season all year round
The exotic physalis is available in the supermarket throughout the year. But if you want to grow the plant yourself, you have to be patient. The sweet-sour-tasting fruits usually do not mature until September.
Physalis come from South America
Physalis, which is strictly speaking only under its generic name in the trade, is also known under the names Andean berry or Cape Gooseberry. These two names illustrate the origin of the herbaceous shrub: South America. From there, most of the fruits available in German supermarkets are imported, except in winter. In the months between November and June, however, the orange fruits are mostly from South Africa.
Home-grown physalis produce late
Physalis cultivated in Germany, on the other hand, produce fruit - provided that they were sown no later than March - starting in September. Since the German summer is much shorter than the warm growing season in the subtropics, many fruits are often not ripe. By contrast, it helps to overwinter the perennial plant - then you can harvest as early as July.
Tips
Physalis is also grown in other countries in the subtropical climate, except in South America and South Africa, such as the southern United States, Australia and New Zealand, India, Kenya and the island of Java.
