To multiply a date palm
Date palms can be multiplied in two ways. However, you need a lot of patience if you yourself want to grow a date palm from seeds. A little bit faster it is when the palm makes saplings that you can easily cut and potted.
Two methods to multiply date palms
You can grow a date palm both vegetatively - that is, over shoots - as well as from seeds.
However, a vegetative propagation is only possible if the date palm drives laterally saplings.
The breeding of seeds is very tedious, but usually works well.
Pull date palm out of seeds
Seeds for date palms are available in stores. If your date palm has flowered and later produced fruit, you can also try to harvest the seeds from it. Often it does not work though. Therefore it is safer to use purchased seeds for propagation.
The seed pots should be deeper than normal flowerpots, since date palms get long taproots. The seeds are very hard-shelled and must swell for at least one day in lukewarm water.
The pots with the seeds ideally place you in a bright, not too sunny place, where the temperatures are around 25 degrees. Once the seedlings have reached a height of ten centimeters, they are repotted into new pots of palm soil.
Use saplings for propagation
Many date palms form new shoots laterally in the spring. These can be safely cut off and used to increase the date palm.
Put the saplings in deeper culture pots. Make the vessels as bright as possible but not sunny. The cuttings are best rooted when the soil temperature is quite high. Keep the soil evenly moist, but make sure that no waterlogging develops.
Do not fertilize in the first year
You must not fertilize the seedlings in the first year, because there are enough nutrients in the shells of the seeds.
Tips
For date palms you may only cut saplings or brown leaves. The palm has only one growing point. If you remove it, the date palm will not grow any longer, but will eventually come in.
