What to do if the phlox is attacked by snails?
Phlox is not one of the preferred plants, but is also eaten if the snails find no better food. A sunny location and feinkrümeliger soil are not very tempting for snails. More protection is provided by a worm fence.
You can do that against snails in your garden
Under no circumstances should you place a jar of beer in your flowerbed. This is so tempting for the snails that they will take long distances and even come from the neighbor's garden to you, picnic on the way not excluded. This will only increase the feeding damage unnecessarily. Collecting the snails together with eggs and preventative protection is actually more effective.
Prevent slug fences. You can buy them in stores or build them yourself. The fences should be dug at least 15 cm into the ground and protrude 10 cm high out of the ground. At the top, the fence has a pointed angled edge that crashes the snails when they crawl up there.
With heavy infestation and a large garden also helps snail grain. There are several varieties that are more or less toxic. Ask your local dealer and choose a variety that is safe for other animals. The active ingredient Methiocarb is very toxic, even to humans, and not recommended.
Snails do not like that
Snails do not like fine-grained or rough soil. Loosen the soil regularly or sprinkle gravel or other coarse material into especially snails threatened beds. Do not pour your phlox in the late evening, snails like to get wet. Predominantly dry or sunny places they will rather avoid. These locations are ideal for the phlox.
