Watering plants properly - The best tips
Whether flowers, vegetables or the lawn: All plants need water. However, when watering the garden, you can do some wrong things, which can quickly make you susceptible to sensitive plants. However, this can be easily prevented by following our tips.
The right time
Especially during the hot summer months, the timing of the decision makes the decision: Do you like reaching for a watering can at lunchtime, so your plant will most likely not get enough water. The majority of precious water does not seep into the ground, but evaporates immediately. Therefore, you should either supply your garden early in the morning or late in the evening with water: At these times, the evaporation rate is significantly lower and it gets more moisture in the roots. At best, water between three and four in the morning, as the soil is cooler and the plant can absorb more water. If you do not want to get up so early, you can make up for the morning watering until six o'clock.
How should you water the best?
Irrigation systems are very handy, but can cause significant damage to many plants. Vegetables, shrubs and perennials should always be watered from below, so that the leaves are not wetted and remain dry. Dampy leaves can cause fungal diseases, such as the dreaded cabbage and brown rot in tomatoes. So always water directly in the root area, but never in one place: plants should always be poured so evenly that all roots get enough water. Otherwise it can lead to uneven growth or plants partially die off.
The pase amount
Be sure to pay attention to the right amount, because different species have a very different water requirement. While some may not dry out, others should be as dry as possible. Waterlogging in turn is deadly for a large part of the garden plants.
Tips
As a rule of thumb for proper casting: The larger the leaves of the plants, the more water they need because of the higher evaporation.
