The pampas grass does not bloom - causes and remedies
You have planted pampas grass and are now waiting impatiently for the first flower? You have to have a bit of patience, because young plants only blossom after a few years. If the flowering leaves later, the perennial may simply be in the wrong location. Sometimes care mistakes are responsible for a non-existent flowering.

With freshly planted pampas grass you have to wait a few years for the first flowering. This is also true if you have propagated the perennial by sharing.
Wrong location
Pampas grass likes it warm and sunny. If the perennial does not get at least four hours of direct sun per day, no flowers will develop. Therefore, only plant pampas grass in a sunny spot. Provide wind protection so the fronds will not break later.
The ornamental grass prefers a dry soil. Waterlogging does not tolerate it at all. Loosen the soil deeply before planting. Very dense soil should be mixed with sand and small stones to make it more permeable.

Wrong care
Very often the pampas grass does not bloom because of one or more care mistakes. Even if the perennial is dry, it should not dry out completely. Pour more often in the heat. Pampas grass in the bucket must be regularly supplied with water.
A plant that grows as fast as pampas grass needs a lot of nutrients. The cheapest way is to sprinkle compost around the perennial and lightly rake every few weeks. Otherwise fertilize with liquid fertilizer for ornamental grasses.
Pampas grass is cut in spring. You must be careful not to hurt the young shoots. If they are damaged, the perennial will not flower.
Male plants bloom only slightly
If the pampas grass is in a favorable location, it has enough nutrients and moisture, but does not bloom, you may have pulled a male plant.
Pampas grass is dioecious, so there are male and female plants. While female plants form many of the decorative fronds, flowering in males remains sparse. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about that.
Make sure you only plant female pampas grass. You should therefore sow no plants from self-collected seeds, because you do not know whether a male or female plant arises. Bought seeds are likely to attract only female plants.
Tips
Pampas grass flowers late in the year. Some varieties start to flower in July, while others do not wear their colored fronds until September.
