Hibernate palm trees outdoors, is that possible?
Most palm species are not hardy and should therefore not be left outside in the cold season. Frost-resistant specimens planted out in the garden always need sufficient winter protection.
Light winter protection
In very mild areas, it is sufficient to bind the leaves together in frost-resistant palms and to protect the roots from frost through a thick mulch layer.
Medium winter protection
At higher temperatures below freezing or in hardy palm plants, which are planted out in a little cooler regions in the garden, it is recommended to wrap the plant additionally with a special plant fleece or jute mats.
Very good winter protection
This is recommended wherever the palm tree outside would be exposed to severe frosts. Ideal is a temporary greenhouse that you can inexpensively build yourself from wood and foil.
Tips
If it gets very cold, it is advisable to additionally heat the palm house. Very suitable is a fan heater with frost guard function. Frequently, open oil lamps are recommended. Of these, we would advise against fire safety reasons.
