Plant the olive tree outdoors
Olive trees planted outdoors are a rare sight in Germany - and for good reason, because the German winter is simply too frosty for the Mediterranean plant. However, in regions with a milder climate free-range farming is possible.
Select the right location
In the harsh North of Germany or in the cold Alpine region, an olive tree planted in the garden will most likely not feel very well and after a cold winter. Only in some winegrowing regions (eg on the Mosel or in the Rheingau) are the climatic conditions sufficiently mild to venture such an attempt. However, before it comes to planting, the right location should first be selected.
Selection of the right variety
Also, not every olive variety is suitable for planting in German gardens. It is advisable to resort to hardy and hardy varieties that have grown up in a similarly harsh climate. Olive trees from Spain or southern Italy are not suitable, because they are not hardy enough. Through years of habituation, however, you can raise your olive tree to greater hardness. Only young trees should not yet be planted, as they are much more sensitive than older specimens.

For planting, you should dig out a large plant hole at the selected location that is about twice as deep as the root ball and at least one third wider. For a sufficient drainage pebbles or potsherds come as the lowest layer in question, these are to prevent the emergence of waterlogging. If you have a rather loose, sandy soil from the outset, then this measure is not necessary. However, if your soil conditions are not optimal, enlarge the planting hole and fill it with a suitable substrate mixture (sand and commercially available potting soil in a ratio of 1: 1). The root ball should be completely covered by soil, also a support for the tree in the form of a rod is advisable. After planting, water your tree vigorously so it grows more easily.
Tips & Tricks
Planted olive trees - unlike potted plants - basically do not need to be watered because the plants get enough water from rain and moisture in the soil. Only in very dry periods additional watering is necessary.
