In Asia, there are countless varieties of Nashis trees. Only a few of them have made the leap to Europe. This is partly because some varieties are rather bland in taste.
Nashi pears are available in two main varieties. One is characterized by yellowish fruits, the other produces bronze-colored Nashis.
The variety is often derived from the variety name. The name yellowish Nashis often ends in "ki", while the bronze-colored fruit ends in "ui".
Not all Nashis are self-pollinating
If you only want to plant a Nashi tree, you must make sure that it is a self-pollinated variety. To harvest fruits from non-self-pollinated varieties, you must either hold several trees in the garden or place the tree next to a pear tree such as "Gellerts Butterbirne" or "Williams Christ".
Self-pollinating Nashi varieties
The yellow-colored Nijisseiki Nashi pear is a self-pollinated variety. It can be kept as a single tree in the garden or in the tub on the terrace. "Nijisseiki" can also be used as a pollinator for non-self-pollinating Nashi trees.
It is most commonly cultivated in European gardens and bears many fruits when properly pruned. The taste is sweet and sour. The fruits are very juicy and well-suited for fresh consumption.
Less well known is the self-pollinated "Naddel Pear", which is sweet and resistant to disease.
