The flowering season of the Milky Star can last for many weeks at a convenient location. But at some point even the strongest plant is dead. How to continue the milk star after flowering depends on the species.

How a daisy is maintained after it has withered depends on whether it is a hardy or frost-sensitive strain.

But for all varieties, you should never cut off the leaves, only the withered inflorescences.

Winter hardy milk star after flowering care

Winter hardy star species such as Ornithogalum saundersiae and O. bellatum remain in the garden all year round. When they are over, just leave them alone.

If the sight disturbs you, you may cut off the withered flowers, but not the leaves. From the leaves, the onion plant gets the nutrients it needs to flower in the next year.

The leaves move in by themselves in the fall. Winter protection is not necessary for hardy species. Some gardeners recommend a light cover with leaves or brushwood, which must be removed in the spring.

Do not cut ornithogalum dubium

Orange Star (Ornithogalum dubium) is used as a houseplant because it is not hardy. When the flowers have faded, place the pot in a light and warm place on the windowsill. With luck, the plant will bloom again, albeit a little more sparingly.

You may only cut off the withered inflorescence. The leaves remain standing until they turn yellow and move in by themselves.

Then remove the onions from the flower pot, shake off the soil and let the tubers dry well. For overwintering, place in a paper bag or wood shavings and store in a dark, cool place until next winter.

Tips

The milk star multiplies via seeds or through the formation of daughter tubers. If you pull the onion plant in the garden, you do not have to worry about the propagation. You can also dig up the tubers and move the tubers to another location.
