Put the chestnuts in a perforated plastic bag and place them in the fridge, which will extend shelf life to about a month. The chestnuts will remain edible longer if you store them in the freezer: they then taste delicious even after a maximum of twelve months.

Freeze chestnuts - step-by-step instructions

Most people would like to cook their chestnuts later. Therefore, we recommend blanching and peeling the chestnuts first and then freezing them.

    Cut in the chestnuts. To do this, pick up a sharp kitchen knife and carve a small cross on the arched side of the chestnuts. This step will make it easier for you to peel the chestnuts in the process. Blanch the chestnuts for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the state of freshness. The fresher the chestnuts are, the less time it takes to cook. Based on our guideline values, you can estimate the duration well: ten minutes for fresh chestnuts, 20 minutes for relatively old specimens. If you do not want to blanch the chestnuts, you also have the option to put them in the oven and bake for half an hour at 180 degrees Celsius. Let the chestnuts cool briefly until you can touch them without pain. Peel the chestnuts. This is quite easy if you drive with a small knife in the incised cross. So the robust shell gives way quickly. Be sure to remove the brown skin just below the skin. It has a very bitter taste, which you can easily do without. Place the chestnuts on a grid where they will dry and continue to cool. Put the chestnuts in smaller portions in freezer bags or tins. The smaller portions are important to provide all chestnuts with sufficient space in the package. If you use freezer bags, you must now remove the excess air from them - either with a vacuum sealer or with your mouth. Seal the bags or cans airtight. Put the containers in the freezer.
