The only really helpful way to permanently get rid of lilies of the valley is to dig up the rhizomes. For this you have to dig with a digger fork all the beds and places where lilies of the valley have spread.
Prick the grave fork in the ground and lift the earth. Now you can pick the rhizomes out by hand. Make sure that you catch all the root parts, because the robust spring blooms also drive out of very small pieces again.
Do not use a spade to destroy the plant. With the spade blade you sting the roots only in smaller parts, which can be worse off the ground.
