True laurel overwinter properly

The real laurel is a plant that has a long tradition of use as a medicinal and spice plant, especially in the Mediterranean region. In Central Europe, real laurel can only be wintered outdoors in specially protected locations, as otherwise it is not hardy.

The origin of the laurel tree

Originally, the real laurel comes from the Middle East, but it has been known since antiquity in the entire Mediterranean as a medicinal and spice plant. Light minus temperatures keep a laurel bush planted into the earth for shorter periods quite. However, the year-round cultivation in the open air in Germany is only possible in very mild locations such as around Lake Constance and also there is a certain winter protection necessary. Since the real laurel is often cultivated in the pot, there is an even greater need for protection of the roots from frost. Finally, delicate roots such as those of the real laurel freeze in a planter even easier than in the sheltered position in the garden soil.

If you really want to venture out to hibernate real laurel outdoors, packing the plant in jute or special winter protection hoods for winter care is one of them. In general, locations in front of sunny house walls or on balconies facing south are to be preferred, since in between, it is easier to thaw the substrate and thus to supply the roots with water.
