Lavender is not suitable as a houseplant
The pretty flowering and intensively fragrant lavender is also cultivated in gardens in Germany and on balconies. Many a plant lover would like to enjoy the plant indoors, but the half-shrub is not very suitable for an attitude in the room.
Lavender should be outside in summer
There are a large number of beautiful indoor plants, all of which have one thing in common: they come from tropical and subtropical regions and therefore could not survive outdoors in our climate zone - with the exception of hot summer days when some palm trees are also on the balcony feels comfortable. Mediterranean plants as well as the lavender one is, however, little suitable as a houseplant. At least in summer, the plant should be allowed to stand in a sunny spot on the balcony or in the garden. The result of cultivating the rooms is usually that the plants do not get enough sun and are therefore weakened. Very often an infestation with plant pests and fungi is the result.
Dried lavender as a home decoration
Still, you do not need to forego the wonderful scent of lavender in the apartment. Instead of a living plant, you can also simply use dried lavender bouquet for home decoration. For this you use flowers as well as stems with leaves that are either braided or packaged in potpourris or sachets.
Lavender in the room over the winter
Even a hibernation in a heated room is problematic, because unlike tropical plants, the lavender needs a winter break. However, most lavender species are not hardy and therefore belong in a cold house, so as to imitate the conditions of the Mediterranean homeland. Cold hibernation means that the plants spend the winter indoors at around 10 to 12 ° C - that can also be in the bedroom (little or not heated) or in a staircase.
Warm overwintered lavender usually enters
By contrast, if you overwinter your lavender in the heated living room, he will most likely not survive the winter. Like so many Mediterranean plants, lavender is evergreen and therefore needs more light the warmer it is in winter. However, the available light intensity in winter is not enough for the lavender. Furthermore, a warm winter hibernation prevents the lavender from its much needed vegetation break, it is weakened and thus more susceptible to disease.
Tips & Tricks
Especially in the bedroom, lavender should have a stimulating effect. Since time immemorial, the herb is considered an aphrodisiac, d. H. its active ingredients increase libido.
