Lavender needs loose and dry soil
The usually very lush blue or purple flowering lavender is an ornament for any garden, also he does not need too much care. However, in order for the Mediterranean, sun-hungry plant to feel comfortable with you, it needs the right soil. We'll tell you what's important.
Sandy and barren should be the soil
Lavendel feels most comfortable in sunny locations with permeable and nutrient-poor soils, like the ground may also be rocky - after all, the plant thrives in their homeland on exactly such soil. It is also important that the lavender does not get "wet feet", that is, the soil should not be heavy and also not tend to store water. Optimal is a sandy soil with a basic to neutral pH - acid soils, as they are often in loamy or peaty substrates, damage the plant. Anyone who has such a soil and still wants to plant lavender should first dig out a deeper pit (about one meter deep) and remove the heavy earth from it. The pit is filled with a potting soil / sand mixture in the ratio 1: 1, after first several centimeters thick layer of pebbles was placed on its base. Similarly, plant lavender in the pot or bucket.
Tips & Tricks
Mix some lime about once or twice a year, especially on heavier soils. Otherwise you avoid too frequent fertilizing, whereby above all nitrogen-containing fertilizers (which also includes manure, eg from chickens or pigeons!) The lavender do not get very well. Instead, you better use a good, lightweight potassium fertilizer.
