Basically bear's garlic is a perennial plant whose good growth depends primarily on location factors such as the right soil substrate, the right amount of light and sufficient moisture in the soil. The leaves grow out of the elongated bulbs, which sit deeply in the ground, annually in spring and often emit a well-recognizable, characteristic odor. Already in the summer, the aboveground plant parts die off after the seeds have been self-seeding and the entire energy of the plants is stored in the bulbs until the next spring.
Which location does the wild garlic prefer?
In nature, the wild garlic is usually found in shady deciduous forests with a humus-rich soil. Especially in hollows with a sufficient soil moisture, the wild garlic can multiply within a few years to a dense plant carpet. If you want to plant wild garlic in your own garden, you should choose a shady and thus evenly humid place in the shade of trees or shrubs.
When should you sow or plant the wild garlic?
There are different options for cultivating wild garlic in the garden:
Often, for the cultivation of wild garlic in the garden plants are excavated from natural resources. Should the consent of the landowner be available outside protected areas, isolated plants may be excavated with a spade or digging fork. However, these must never dry out during transport to the new destination. Easier is the cultivation in the garden with wild garlic onions from the trade. Since the wild garlic proliferates under good conditions, the onions should not be put too tight. When sowing seeds you should refrain from foraging and sow them directly at the planned location. Since the seeds of wild garlic need up to two years for germination, otherwise a consistently uniform soil moisture can hardly be maintained.

The taste of wild garlic is not so intense in March and April, so the young leaves are preferably harvested in these months. In late spring and summer, the leaves become increasingly fibrous and begin to wither.

The planting of wild garlic in your own garden can protect you from confusion with poisonous doppelgangers, but the leaves should still be tested for their garlic-like odor. If there is a suspicion of fox tapeworm, you should avoid raw consumption.
