Freeze leek onions - instructions and tips

Spring onions have a special talent: They give salads and other dishes such a spicy-spicy aroma that you can often do without other spices. Therefore, it is not surprising that many people like to keep several of these tasty onions in stock at home to use them when needed. In the fridge, this vegetable does not last long - but it can be frozen. How exactly do you find out in our article!

Potential dangers of freezing leek onions

When freezing onions, things can go wrong. Possible results are:

To prevent these scenarios, it is important to act carefully. Follow our instructions. It leads you to a satisfactory result.

Freeze spring onions - simple step-by-step instructions

Clean your spring onions thoroughly. Then carefully dry the onions. Before freezing, the leek onions must be completely dry - otherwise they get freezer burn in the freezer and are no longer usable. Cut the onions with a sharp kitchen knife in small rings or in bars. In this way, you save space in the freezer and have the onions almost ready to serve, if you want to use them after weeks or months. Fill the rings or bars in small portions in freezer bags or, instead, in lockable boxes suitable for the freezer. If you opt for freezer bags, you must remove these after filling with the spring onions, the excess air. A vacuuming device is enormously helpful. If such is not available to you, just use your mouth. Close the bags or boxes firmly (airtight). Put the containers with the spring onions in the freezer.

Tips

In the freezer, the onions keep up to half a year.

Alternative: Blanch spring onions before freezing

If you blanch the leek onions before freezing, they are almost as fresh after thawing as before. Thats how it works:

After thorough brushing, add the onions to boiling salted water. Turn the heat back so that the water is still simmering. Leave the spring onions for a maximum of ten minutes. Drain the onions (use sieve).

The further procedure is the same as in the method without blanching.

Special tip: freeze leek onions separately after parts

It is wise to freeze the white and green parts of the spring onions separately. Sometimes you need only the white or only the green elements of the vegetables - so it makes sense to keep them separately, in order to be able to grab each bag.

Thaw leek onions and continue to use

If you would like to use the spring onions for soups or other cooking dishes, you can thaw them before use. On the other hand, for salads you should bet better on the uncaused onions. After thawing, the vegetables tend to have a soft, mushy texture.

Good news at the end: The valuable ingredients are largely preserved by freezing.
