So you can build a herbal spiral with gabions yourself
Gabions are called baskets filled with stones. When selecting the stones, you should orientate yourself to the material that has already been used for walls or for fixing surfaces. Granite and sandstone are often the first choice, but also broken concrete or self-collected field stones are conceivable.
Build herbal spiral from gabions
You can already buy gabions for herbal spirals at the hardware store and only have to assemble and fill them. For this you need spiral wires and tension anchors (usually included) and galvanized wire. The stone material should not be so small that it falls through the bars, but not too big either. On tools, it is advisable to keep pliers and bolt cutters ready.
Assemble gabions
First of all, you have to assemble the gabions by connecting the grids tightly together at the outer edges. To do this, cut pieces of wire 10 to 15 centimeters long that are laid around the edges and twisted tight with pliers. The solid wire is better than the usually supplied spiral wire, because less play arises and the baskets stand so safe. Once the Körber are assembled, prepare the substrate at the selected location:
Subsequently, the lower baskets are first placed and densely coated with stones. The material should be stacked as tightly and tightly as possible to maintain stability. Tension anchors serve to reinforce the grids. Now you can put on more baskets, connect with wires and then fill with stones.
Fill and plant the herb spiral
At the bottom, gravel or construction debris always comes in the finished gabion spiral, depending on the height of the subsequent surface in varying quantities - at the end, the typical, spiral conical shape should have arisen. Then you fill sand and gravel and as the last layer the actual substrate, which differs depending on the placement within the spiral. All the way up, there is a lean, sandy substratum, in the descending fields it should become more and more nutritious. Then you can plant the spiral with the selected herbs.
Tips
A herbal spiral should always be placed as close to the house as possible and in a sunny and sheltered location.
