Is the coconut a nut?
As popular and well-known as the coconut is, hardly anyone knows how to classify it botanically. The coconut, which belongs to the stone fruits, grows on a tropical tree, which belongs to the palm family.
The nut that is not
Botanically, the coconut is a lonely stone fruit and not a real nut. Often the approximately 20 to 30 cm long fruit has a slightly triangular shape. It weighs in the ripe state between 900 and about 2500 grams. The actual seed is surrounded by three coalesced layers.
The outer shell is very hard. On one side are three so-called seed holes, of which only one contains an active germ. This germ hole is a bit softer than the two inactive ones. There, the nut is also drilled to remove the coconut water for drinking.
