Fertilize lilac - How and with what?
Many garden owners will probably not fertilize their lilac, but rather rub their eyes wondering if this question. In fact, it can be very useful to provide even planted lilac bushes with additional nutrients. Why this works and how to do it the best way is explained in the following article.
Do you have to fertilize planted lilac?
Basically, you do not have to fertilize your garden lilac. However, if this has been at its location for a few years and you may already have wondered about a post-flowering blooms, then the cause could be a lack of supply of essential nutrients. If the lilac suffers from a lack of nutrients, it no longer has enough power for the development of the flower - and eventually it may not even bloom. Lilacs in locations with very poor soils also benefit from a fertilizer supply.
When is the best fertilizer?
Both planted and potted plants are first fertilized for the first time in early spring, shortly before sprouting. Depending on the nature of the soil, this may be sufficient if the soil is rather nutrient-rich. On the other hand, if the surface is rather sandy and lean, you can supply the lilac once again in June.
Since lilacs (with the exception of the Preston lilac) are preferably in calcareous soil, the pH of the soil should be between 5.5 and 7. If it is lower, fertilize the plant once a year with a calcareous fertilizer. Carefully work this into the top soil layer.
First fertilization already at the planting
The first fertilizer receives the lilac but already at the planting. Here you mix the excavation with plenty of compost and a generous handful of horn shavings. The natural fertilizer stimulates healthy growth and provides the plant with all the nutrients it needs to grow successfully.
Fertilize planted lilacs properly
Whether and how you should fertilize your planted lilac depends on the specific soil conditions in your garden. The leaner this is, the more often fertilization is required. If possible, use an organic, slow-acting fertilizer with high levels of potassium and phosphorus. For this purpose, only a small amount of nitrogen should be present, as this acts as a growth booster, with the result that the lilac grows very quickly and forms many shoots - but no flowers.
Which fertilizers are suitable for supplying the lilac?
Organic fertilizers are perfectly adequate for nutrient supply and also have the advantage that they do not infiltrate the groundwater. Especially suitable for lilac are:

Lilac in the pot should be placed in fresh substrate and possibly in a larger pot every two years. Otherwise, between April and September about every two weeks fertilized with a liquid flowering plant fertilizer.
