Not everyone has a garden that has enough room to grow big sunflowers. Many flower lovers rely on the balcony and terrace. For these locations, small sunflowers are better. They do not get that high and take less space overall.
Small sunflowers need less space
Large sunflower varieties reach a height of about three meters. Sometimes they even get five meters high. These varieties need a lot of space not only in height, but also in width.
The smaller the adult sunflowers are, the less space is required. Especially on the terrace or the balcony, the small varieties can be wonderfully grown in a bucket or pot.
Most small varieties are low in pollen
Most of the small sunflower species are hybrids. They produce only a few pollen. This leaves the terrace and balcony clean, because no pollen deposits.
However, these species are not a good solution for the environment. Bumblebees and other insects, which feed on pollen, find no food in the flowers. Also, these varieties do not germinate nuclei.
If possible, try to breed normal species on the balcony.
Care of small sunflowers
The care does not differ from those who need large sunflowers. It is important that the soil is never completely dry and that the flowers are fertilized regularly, so that they can develop many flowers.
