Kiwis are not citrus fruits

The kiwi, also known as Chinese gooseberry, is a berry fruit, as are lemons, oranges & Co. Botanically, the kiwi is not related to citrus fruits. The kiwi surpasses the lemon in vitamin C content.

Apart from the high vitamin C content and the fact that kiwis and citrus fruits belong to the berry fruits, these two exotic fruits do not have much in common. While the citrus plants are assigned to the family Rautengewächse, the Kiwipflanzen belong to the family of the Strahlbuchelgewächse. The citrus fruits include besides lemons:

similarities and differences

The deciduous kiwi shrubs and evergreen citrus trees are warm-loving and thrive in subtropical and tropical climates. Both plants are susceptible to frost and need winter protection in local latitudes or must be overwintered frost-free. The citrus plants, unlike the rather robust kiwi plants, are more susceptible to disease and pests.

The citrus fruits are a special form of the berry. The kiwi was originally from Asia to New Zealand as a Chinese gooseberry, where it was later renamed by New Zealand fruit growers for its resemblance to the native bird. In addition, the Actinidia deliciosa and all citrus species combines the fine-sour taste and high content of vitamin C. The kiwifruit are harvested immature, unlike citrus fruits and ripen after storage.

What makes kiwis healthy

The kiwis are healthy and an ideal source of vitamins for the cold season, when no fresh fruit from local cultivation is available.Kiwifruit are low in calories, low in fat and high in vitamin C. 100 grams of kiwi provide 95% of an adult's daily requirement for vitamin C. In addition, they contain the protein-splitting enzyme actinidin, which promotes the digestion of meat meals.

Tips & Tricks

Kiwi can also be eaten with shell. It should be thoroughly washed and rubbed off beforehand so that the fine hairs do not bother anymore.
