Kiwi is also growing in the tub
The native of China kiwi shrub can be cultivated in the garden as a potted plant. This requires a sufficiently large vessel with a good substrate and thick drainage layer. Consistent cut and suitable climbing aid are also important.
Among the exotics, kiwi is considered easy to care for and robust. The attitude in the bucket can only be made difficult by the fact that the kiwi plants are very vigorous. You can reach heights of up to 10 meters in optimally selected locations. Therefore, when purchasing, do not choose only one species that is sufficiently hardy for your region, but also a weak one.
Location and care of the tub kiwi
Since at least one female and one male plant is needed to harvest the fruits, one large planter - sufficient for two plants - or two adjacent pots is required. Even the self-pollinated kiwi varieties wear better, if you plant more than one plant next to each other.
For the kiwi plants in the tub, a good substrate with ph value in the acidic range is particularly important. Otherwise, the same applies to the kiwi in the tub as to outdoor plant:
Cut the tub kiwi
In order to keep the prone to proliferating kiwi shrub permanently in the bucket, we recommend a consistent shortening of the strong-awake branches, if necessary several times a year. Only in the early spring before flowering should not be cut, as there is a risk that the two-year-old wood flower buds are cut away. During the summer one cuts the fruit shoots only five eyes behind the fruits, with a second cut then one or two eyes behind it.
Tips & Tricks
The Kiwi Kiwis should be winterized frosty and dark in the first year. Later, ensure good winter protection around the tub and in the root area. The mini kiwis need extra protection against late frosts during spring when they are sprouting.
