What to do if the cherry laurel gets brown spots?
Sometimes gardeners have to realize with horror that the cherry laurel on many leaves has unsightly reddish brown spots. It does not always have to be the dreaded shotgun disease. Even after severe cold frosts, the laurel cherry often has leaf damage
Brown spots due to cold damage
Not all laurel cherry species are completely frost hardy and survive harsh winters unscathed. They suffer frostbite during the icy winter months, which often show up only when they shoot in the spring. The leaves become brownish, dry and eventually fall off.

The laurel cherry is well tolerated cut and drives out of the perennial wood willingly. Wait with the pruning but until you can estimate how far the shrubs are frozen back. They recognize the frost damage by the fact that the affected branches do not continue to drive or show a gray-brown coloring below the bark. Cut the branches into healthy wood.
Brown leaf spots caused by leaf spot fungi
In the case of a fungal attack, initially there are circular, brown spots on the top of the leaves. As a result, the leaf tissue thins out and is eventually repelled by the laurel cherry. Through the remaining holes, the cherry laurel looks like a shotgun. Because of this appearance, leaf blotch disease is also referred to as shotgun disease.

Fighting the fungus
If only a few leaves show the typical brown spots, it is sufficient to cut them off and dispose of them. Thus, in many cases a spread of the fungal disease can be avoided. If the plant is more heavily attacked, you will receive highly effective fungicides in the trade, with which you can fight the shotgun disease successfully.
Tips & Tricks
On the leaf underside of the laurel cherry are small brown dots from which the plant secretes sweet nectar. These natural leaf spots can easily be confused with those caused by fungi.
