The cherry trees are easy to care for
Both sweet and sour cherry trees are among the easy-care fruit trees in the garden. In order to harvest healthy fruits from a cherry tree for many years, the tree, as the most important care measure, needs above all a regular cut.
The cherry trees feel comfortable in a sunny spot with nutrient rich, well drained and not too moist soil. Once the site-specific variety has been selected, no costly care measures need to be taken to ensure good yields: moderate watering, occasional fertilization and annual cut are sufficient.
Water and fertilizer
The cherry trees do not like wet floors. Nevertheless, they should be watered under prolonged drought to allow the necessary nutrient uptake. In summer, a mulch layer should be spread on the tree disc, which prevents drying out. After planting or transplanting, sufficient watering is important for fine root formation.
When planting a cherry tree, compost, well-deposited manure or potting soil is added to the planting hole. Thus, the nutrient requirement of the young cherry tree is initially covered. Protection against pests
Shortly after flowering, the cherry trees should be protected from birds by a net. The cherry fruit fly and black cherry aphid can sometimes only be treated with approved sprays. The fight against fungal infestation takes place mainly by suitable cutting measures.

Immediately after planting, a planting cut is made to balance the roots and crown. The first years after planting are dedicated to the crown construction, to serve the so-called education cut. Later, it is about obtaining and promoting the yield by clearing and removing the removed fruit wood.
Tips & Tricks
In order to protect the delicate cherry blossoms from frost in cold April and May nights, frost protection is carried out in commercial fruit growing. The trees are sprayed with fine water droplets permanently. The resulting ice layer protects it from frost.
