Cherry trees for terraces and balconies
Gardening without a garden is the new trend. Even if you have only little space available, you do not have to do without the tasty cherries from our own production. The pillar cherries make it possible to grow in a pot.
Characteristics of the column cherry trees
In the trade, many different and quite robust varieties of sweet and sour cherry are now offered as pillar trees. These need in width about one meter of space and are ideal for the terrace or balcony planting, but of course also for small gardens.
It should also be noted that the height is sufficient, as the full-grown canary cherries can reach a height of between 2 and 3.5 m, depending on the variety. The offered varieties are self-pollinated. The small cherry trees can be harvested one to two years after planting, but they do not have too long life expectancy.
Plant and care for the pillar cherry
The location for the pillar cherry should be sunny and airy. Depending on the variety purchased, you need a sufficiently large pot or bucket filled with a loose, nutrient-rich soil. Since the cherry trees do not tolerate permanently wet soils, care should be taken to ensure good drainage in the pot. However, the soil in the pot should not completely dry out, the regular supply of water is important.
The annual chamois also need an annual cut in order to preserve and promote the instinct, flowering and rich harvest. This is usually done after the harvest. As with a large cherry tree, the worn fruit wood shoots are shortened.
The fertilization of the column cherry trees should be done according to the dealer's instructions. The cherry trees planted in the pot have only the nutrients available to plant soil. In winter, the cherries may need frost protection. It should be covered not only the tree itself, but also the bucket with a suitable material.
