A garden pond of stones looks nice of course

Beautiful and natural: the garden pond made of stones

Easy to build and often cheaper than a plastic prefabricated pool is a garden pond made of natural stones. Designed as a rustic raised bed, it fits particularly well on small plots in the optics and can be planted very close to nature, even with tall plants.

Natural stone exterior walls are a popular and visually very impressive design solution for ponds with a shallow depth of water that sometimes even have a high bed pattern. The advantage, especially for small gardens with unfavorable soil: There is no need to dig a large excavation pit, often already a shaft depth of 20 to 30 cm is sufficient.

Structure of the natural stone pond

If in the load-bearing lowest layer as wide as possible stones, the entire structure gets the necessary stability, so that the height from the ground to the upper edge may well be about 50 cm. Therefore, you do not need cement to build, as the stones are simply stacked on top of each other. It should be three to a maximum of six layers, each individual can be solidified with some sand in the spaces between the stone slabs if necessary.

Stone wall with foil lining

After the desired height has been reached, the stone edges of the inner sides are defused by being padded with earth at particularly projecting points in order to avoid subsequent damage from cracks in the film. For the following interior lining, you need a 31.18 m2 PVC foil (544 x 736 cm) with a thickness of one millimeter at a pond size of 400 x 600 x 60 cm.

For reasons of stability, a protective fleece (thickness: 1mm, material thickness: 300 g / m2) should be laid out on the bottom of the pond. The initially protruding edge of the film was estimated to be 60 cm / side.

Foil requirements for further pond sizes

Fill the natural stone pond with water

The pool is first placed under water so that the film comes to rest on the floor taut and the pond is filled to a quarter. Any leaks on the underside would now be recognizable. If everything is tight, cut the film back to an overhang of 30 cm at the side, roll it inwards and place a finishing layer with stones on top.

Tips

If the stones are cleverly stacked on top of each other, there are sufficient niches in the interior for later planting, which makes them particularly natural.
