Currants are the classic berry fruit in the garden. Especially the red berries enjoy great popularity. But the cultivation of black and white currants is worthwhile, because the flavors differ significantly from each other.

Which floor is suitable for cultivation?
The berry bushes love a well-drained, humus-rich soil. Grow lean potting soil with mature compost. Prevent waterlogging, because they do not tolerate the shrubs well.
When is the best planting time for currants?
Currant bushes are best planted in late autumn. If necessary, you can still bring them into the ground in early spring.
How are the bushes planted?
The planting hole should be about twice as large as the root ball. The hole is filled up with mature compost.
A mulch layer under the bushes prevents the emergence of weeds. In addition, you do not need to fertilize the berries so often.
How big should the planting distance be?
Depending on which varieties you grow, you should maintain a planting distance of 1.50 to 2 meters in the row and at least 2 meters between rows.
When do currants have harvest time?
The harvest season starts at the end of June and lasts until August. Black currants will ripen a little later than red or white currant varieties.
Can redcurrants be transplanted?
Basically, the shrubs can transplant. For this, the plants have to be excavated generously and used at the new location.
However, it takes two to three years after transplanting, until the bushes bear again. Since currants only produce fruits for a maximum of 15 years, it is usually not worth replanting them. It is cheaper to put the same young plants.
How are red currants propagated?
Propagation is by cuttings. These are cut by the annual shoots of a well-bearing plant and stuck in the ground.
The lowering of shoots is also possible to gain new shrubs. However, the young plants need three years to carry the first berries.
Which plants are suitable as neighbors?
Currant shrubs should not be too close together or too close to other plants. An exception is wormwood, which otherwise can tolerate hardly any other plant.
