The Japanese umbrella fir does not really need pruning
The Japanese umbrella fir cut: how, when, why?
Freshly bought, it looks flawless with its conical shape, its umbrella-like needles and its exotic expression. But does it stay that way? Does the Japanese umbrella need a regular shape cut or pruning all the way down?
Cutting - only necessary in exceptional cases
The Japanese umbrella fir needs in general no cut. Once bought, it retains its basic structure and only gets bigger with the years. Overall, it can grow up to 10 m tall.
She is inherently a uniform, conical growth in the cradle. Nevertheless, a cut can be useful:
Shape cut is unnecessary
Thanks to the natural cone shape, it is not necessary to trim the Japanese umbrella fir every year to preserve its distinctive shape. The growth is also very slow with an average of 20 cm and a maximum of 30 cm per year. Also, it is designed extremely dense, so that the shoots do not have to be shortened, to encourage them to branch.
When is the pase editing time?
Do you still want to cut the Japanese umbrella fir? Then in the winter, outside of their main growing season, the best time has come. Pick the pruning shears or saw between mid-February and early March. But beware: Only on a frost-free day!
Do not cut the main drive, cut the side shoots
Basically, it is important to never shorten their lead when cutting the Japanese umbrella fir. Anyone who does that must not be surprised if the plant does not continue to grow. Only the side shoots should - if necessary - be shortened.
Tips
If you cut off plant parts that are affected by disease, do not throw them on the compost. The pathogens often survive and can later turn into other plants in compost. For example, destroy or dispose of diseased parts in household waste.
