Is parsley two or more years old?
Parsley is a biennial crop. In very good site conditions, it can even be perennial, but then no longer usable as a spice plant. It forms from the bloom in the second year only few sheets, which contain too high portion of poisonous Apiol.

Parsley is grown in the garden or on the balcony as a biennial plant.
With good site conditions, it will come back in the following years. However, the leaves should then no longer be used for seasoning.
The plants are removed after flowering in the second year, since the yield in the following years is hardly significant.
Parsley plants in the first year
In the first year after sowing, the parsley develops many leaves around the heart.
The leaves are particularly aromatic at this time.
They are cut close to the ground. The heart must not be injured, because then no new leaves regrow.
The flower in the second year
At the latest in May inflorescences begin to form. The flowering period of parsley lasts from June to July.
Once the plant flowers, the leaves are no longer edible. In them accumulates the poisonous apiol, an essential oil that can cause spasms of digestive organs and uterus.
If you want to harvest seeds, let the plants stand until the seeds are ripe. Dried seeds can be stored for up to three years. Attention: The seed is poisonous!
Sowing in August or spring
Parsley can be sowed from February to August on the windowsill or in April or August directly in the field.
August sowing is preferable in the field, since the plants are then less affected by diseases and pests.
Tips & Tricks
If you want to grow parsley throughout the garden, you should plant new beds each year. You will then always have sufficient supply of particularly aromatic herb and can easily compost the plants after flowering.
