Is the Indian armchair hardy?

The Indianernessel is a very pretty to look at, with colorful flowers framing summer shrubs, which also requires little care. There are several species known, in particular Monarda didyma ("Gold Melissa") and Monarda fistulosa ("Wild Monarde") and their hybrids are common. No matter which Indian armchairs you are interested in, all species are absolutely hardy.

Robust Indian armchair

It is a very robust plant that is rarely attacked by pests or diseases. The problem is only the powdery mildew, but typically occurs only in summer and usually has too dry or too narrow location as a cause. Indian weeds tolerate frosty temperatures very well, provided they are in the past.

Select location pas

For a hibernation-free wintering the right location is essential. The plants prefer - depending on the species - slightly different places. The golden melissa, for example, prefers a slightly shady, slightly moist location, although this should not be too wet. Significantly more dryness Monarda tolerates fistulosa, which should therefore be better transplanted into a rather sandy soil. Be sure to avoid waterlogging in both species - this will only cause the plant to rot and deteriorate - a real danger, especially in mild but wet winters.

Preparing Indian armchair for the winter

Indian sprigs dry up after flowering and can therefore be cut back just before the onset of winter until just above the ground. Further winter preparation measures such as covering with brushwood or mulching are not necessary. In the spring you feed the Indiana with ripe compost. The starter fertilizer ensures that the perennials are well-supplied again.

Tips

The pre-winter pruning can of course also be done in the spring. However, if you start the scissors too late, the sprouting may be delayed and thus hinder the growth and flowering of the otherwise vigorous plants.
