Grooming hyacinths in the garden
Hyacinths delight with their fragrant flowers every gardener's heart. In the garden they grow in the same place for many years. The robust onion plants do not need much care in the field. Above all, the location is important.
The right location makes it
Hyacinths grow best in a sunny spot. In partial shade, they thrive only if they get at least three hours of sun a day.
The soil must be permeable and slightly nutritious. Solid soils mix with sand or gravel to prevent waterlogging. Somewhat mature compost in the planting holes is enough to fertilize completely.
In spring, the soil may be moist, because during the flowering period, the hyacinth needs sufficient moisture. In the summer after flowering, the plant lays down a rest period in which it likes to dry.
The best time to set the tubers
The bulbs of the hyacinth put you best in the fall. During the winter, the tuber has time to develop and also gets the necessary frost.
If necessary, you can still plant hyacinths in spring, but then they bloom only slightly in the first year.
Hyacinths driven into the house may only be set outdoors if it is precluded that it freezes again.
Plant tubers properly
Dig out planting holes that are at least twice as deep as the tuber itself. Keep a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters between the plants.
Grooming hyacinths in the garden
You only have to water in the spring until the end of the flowering season. Then the hyacinth gets no more water.
Fertilization is not necessary. At best, you can add some compost to the plants in autumn.
Cut only the withered flowers. The green leaves must not be removed.
Hyacinths need frost
Hyacinths are hardy and do not need frost protection. On the contrary - the tubers are stratified by frost. Only then do they drive their characteristic flowers in spring.
Tips & Tricks
Voleurs like to eat the hyacinth bulbs. Protect the tubers in the field with wire baskets. The baskets should not be too narrow, because the onions develop many daughter tubers.
