Farm Hydrangea "Endless Summer" - no pruning in spring
The new strain "Endless Summer" is a Macrophylla variety, d. H. it is one of the popular farm hydrangeas, which are botanically correct as Hydrangea macrophylla called. In contrast to the classic farm hydrangeas "Endless Summer" blooms on both the old and the new wood - a real exception among the Macrophylla hydrangeas. Nevertheless, it is treated as well as other farm hydrangeas with regard to cutting measures.

Worldwide there are about 70 different types of hydrangeas, of which, however, only a small part thrives in German gardens for climatic reasons. The most widespread are the numerous varieties of Macrophylla hydrangeas, which are also referred to as farm hydrangeas. When it comes to cutting, all garden hydrangeas can be divided into two groups. The first group must not be cut back, as these varieties form their flowers on the previous year's shoots. Hydrangeas of the second group, on the other hand, have to be cut because their flowers only appear on fresh shoots. However, "Endless Summer" is an exception, because it blooms on both types of wood.
Meaningful care cut in the spring
Although the Hydrangea "Endless Summer" should not be cut back, nevertheless, some nourishing cutting measures are useful:
Elaborate older copies and rejuvenate
Younger hydrangeas of the variety "Endless Summer" should not be cut in the first years, so that they can build up to stately bushes. It takes a few years for a clearing and rejuvenation cut to be made, cutting off about a third of the oldest branches just above the ground. This rejuvenation cut should be carried out unconditionally, as the hydrangea otherwise ages and significantly decreases in their flowering performance. Too closely awake shoots can be removed regularly, so that the inner parts of the plant get enough light and air.
Tips & Tricks
In contrast to other farm hydrangeas, "Endless Summer" is not a problem when flower buds freeze to death due to late frosts in spring. New buds are immediately reproduced on the young shoots. Frozen shoots should also be cut away in spring, as they form a gateway for various pathogens and weaken the plant as a whole.
