High bed special form: The plant or flower shelf

Raised beds enjoy great popularity, but they offer the opportunity for carefree gardening even in physical disabilities or lack of garden area. They are available in countless shapes and variations, but sometimes take up a lot of space. But what if the space for a classic raised bed is insufficient?

Comfortable gardening in little space

If the balcony or patio is very small, you should not garden in the horizontal - let your plants stacked on top of each other instead! In this way, you only need a very small footprint, but still bring the desired flowers, vegetables or herbs. The convenient gardening in a small space is made possible by so-called plant shelves (which are sometimes referred to as flower shelves), which are simply placed at the desired location and at best well secured. This can be done for example by hiring and screwing to a balcony wall.

Plant shelves made of wood, metal or plastic - which is better?

Plant shelves come in many shapes, sizes and materials. Basically, these are normal shelves that have been designed specifically for plant culture - and therefore have wider shelves or more space between floors. They are made of wood, metal or plastic. Which material you personally prefer depends entirely on your taste. And about where the plant shelf should stand and what the weather is exposed to it. Wood, for example, weathers quite fast if it is constantly exposed to moisture. Hardwood shelves (eg larch or Douglas fir), however, are much more robust and therefore more durable than soft wood such as spruce. Plastic shelves, on the other hand, are particularly suitable for small balconies due to their low weight - in the end, you always have to keep an eye on their carrying capacity or statics.

The correct planting of a plant shelf

For planting such a plant shelf, you must place suitable planters on the shelf. These can be individual pots, but also whole plant boxes (or flower boxes, fruit boxes). So that the next gust of wind does not push them out of the shelf, you should secure them. For this purpose, for example, a transverse bar made of wood or metal is suitable. In the planters fill suitable potting soil. If you want to use the shelf for growing young plants, you can turn it into a greenhouse with the help of foil webs in an instant.

Tips

In general, shelves in the immediate vicinity of conventional raised beds are extremely practical, but serve as a storage area for baskets and other containers, utensils or fertilizers. In this way you have everything you need for work on the raised bed.
