Useful planting plan criteria for the raised bed
Since the space in the raised bed is limited, every year the question arises: which plants do I put into the bed and how do I best use the available space? You can decide when to plant something based on the following criteria.
crop rotation
The term "crop rotation" is understood by the gardener to mean two things: Firstly, no plants of the same cultivation group (eg root vegetables, cucurbits, nightshade plants, legumes) and the same plant family are cultivated every three to four years. Since these are often haunted by the same pests, the resourceful gardener tricked the animals with a crop rotation: they then have no chance to multiply next year and make themselves in even greater numbers on the plants heart. On the other hand, "crop rotation" also means that one plants the plants, divided according to their nutritional needs in high, medium and low-level, in three to four-year rotation successively on a bed.
Example of a crop rotation in the raised bed
An example of good crop rotation on a compost raised bed:
1st year (hard-earner): zucchini, tomatoes, endives
2nd year (middle earner): Kohlrabi (center), framed by head and pea salad and lamb's lettuce, as well as carrots, onions, parsnips and strawberries
3rd year (weak): bush beans (middle), summer purslane, lamb's lettuce, carrots, radishes, culinary herbs (parsley, chives ...)
mixed culture
In a mixed culture you mix plants from different plant families together so that the space in the raised bed is used optimally. The optimal use is firstly a temporal, by starting early with the sowing or planting and seeding or harvesting harvested areas directly. Secondly, it is a spatial one if you combine the plants so that you can plant them as densely as possible. For this purpose, the plants should complement each other above ground and underground well: in addition to narrow deep roots such as carrots fit well bush beans. And thirdly, a good mixed culture helps keep plants healthy by eliminating pests.
Tips
In principle, any crop can grow in the raised bed, but if you want to take advantage of the space and the season as well as possible, less voluminous and fast growing plants are more useful than those that take up much space or have a long germination period.
