Can a raised bed be set up without ground contact?
Classically, a raised bed always has normal garden soil and is separated from it only by a wire mesh. However, there are a number of reasons why you want to build a raised bed without any ground contact - either because it is not given on a balcony or on the terrace or because you as a wheelchair user want a barrier-free gardening option.
Classic raised bed without ground contact
The missing floor of a conventional raised bed ensures that excess pouring water and rainwater can flow away unhindered. If this soil contact is missing, the water can accumulate inside the bed - the plants are literally drowned. Nevertheless, direct contact with the ground is not necessary if you prevent waterlogging in other ways - for example, by attaching drainage holes to the side walls (for example, if the bed is on the patio) or simply providing rain protection (such as a Plexiglas roof).
Table high bed for balcony and terrace
If you do not want to do without practical gardening in the raised bed despite the lack of a garden, you can fall back on practical table high beds on the balcony or terrace. These are flat raised beds without any ground contact, since the plant container is located well above the surface. These special raised beds are specially designed to meet the static requirements of a balcony for which a conventional raised bed is too heavy. However, table raised beds can only be filled with soil (and not in the layer system like a normal raised bed), because the available space does not allow composting. Furthermore, wheelchair users or seniors who are not too good on foot have to do without gardening in the raised bed. Especially for these garden friends, the retractable raised beds have been developed, which are either recessed on one or on two sides so that comfortably fits under it a wheelchair or other seating. Even these raised beds usually have little or no contact with the ground.
Tips
When watering raised beds without contact with the ground, make sure that you do not pene- trate the plants - the lack of drainage means that excess irrigation water can not escape.
