When should a raised bed be kept rather low?

Usually you build a raised bed so that you can work in it comfortably standing or with a stool. However, some people need a much lower raised bed, for example, because they are sitting in a wheelchair or have a small body size.

Height of the raised bed depends on the height

People have very different body measurements, from the one-meter high toddler to very tall men and women. Therefore, the height of a raised bed should optimally be planned so that the person most frequently working on it can work comfortably. The rule of thumb is that the upper edge of the raised bed should always be at the level of the iliac crest, ergo around 85 to 100 centimeters.

Keep an eye on the future when planning the raised bed

Consider the raised bed also, that - depending on how durable and stable you build your bed - with the years probably smaller and less well can stand. In this case, there are constructions that can be easily adjusted in height and those that expand as desired or even dismantle and can be rebuilt in another place.

In which cases low raised beds can be useful

In some cases, raised beds are not built in the usual standing height, but much lower. There are several reasons for this. Usually lower beds have a height between 50 and 65 centimeters, so that the necessary work can be done comfortably while sitting - for example, from a recessed in the edge of the bed construction seating.

Low raised beds as garden replacement

Some areas are not suitable for cultivation of vegetables and / or ornamental surfaces - either because the soil is too heavy and loamy or otherwise unsuitable (for example too humid) or because your garden has a steep slope. In this case, low raised beds may still allow gardening, for example by placing them as compost beds, relocating (and replenishing) the bedding's location every one to two years, and in the process upgrading your garden gradually with self-produced humus.

Low raised beds for tall crops

Also, low raised beds are very well suited for very high-alert, but care-intensive crops such as cherry tomatoes, which you can pour and harvest while standing back-friendly. Only the preparation of the soil is done sitting down. Even table-toppers are usually significantly lower in height between about 60 to 70 centimeters than the traditional beds. They are particularly suitable for wheelchair users.

Tips

Even raised beds for children should be built according to the height of the child. Here are also individual forms such as mini raised beds in fruit boxes very well.
