There are now a variety of cat litter varieties that are expressly offered as compostable. Nevertheless, you should exercise caution when composting the litter box. When may cat litter on the compost?
Can cat litter on the compost?
Whether cat litter is allowed on the compost depends on which cat litter you use. If the litter is provided with fragrances, you should basically not compost them.
Of course you can dispose of compostable cat litter on the compost, but you should pay attention to a few things.
Cats are carnivores like dogs. Their feces often contain worms and other pests, especially if the cat is a free-range. The parasites are not eliminated in the compost because it does not reach the necessary temperatures. If you later bring the humus into the garden for fertilization, the eggs of the pests continue to spread.
Compostable cat litter varieties
Suitable for composting are stray varieties, which consist predominantly of cellulose. But also bentonite, perlite and sand can be disposed of on the compost.
Always mix cat litter well
If cat litter is placed in a large pile on the compost, there is a risk that the material clumps. These chunks are then very firm and do not decompose.
You must therefore spread the cat litter as thin as possible. It is best to mix them with other materials such as grass clippings, ashes or green waste. Then the rotting process runs very fast.
Remove feces and urine lumps as these may contain parasites. This is especially important if the cat has been treated with medications such as antibiotics.
Compact floors with cat litter
Cat litter and other compost materials are ideal for loosening compacted soils, especially loam and clay soils.
On vegetable beds you should never use humus from cat litter. For flowerbeds it is not a problem if you have carefully collected the leftovers of the cats from the litter before composting.
Tips
You can dispose of compostable cat litter well in the bio waste bin provided by the garbage disposal. However, that is not allowed in every community. Inquire in advance if biotons are being shipped with cat litter.
