Pallets are a cheap material for the frame of raised beds

Straightforward and fast built: raised bed made of pallet frame

There are countless ways to build a raised bed. In addition to the various materials, all of which have their specific advantages and disadvantages, even very simple kits from other areas of life are available. For example, raised beds can be very easily constructed from Euro pallets or their pallet top frames (also called pallet frames).

Pallet frames are available in different sizes

Euro pallets and pallet frames are widely used in logistics because they protect all sorts of products that can be shipped. They are also referred to as a wooden frame, are very durable and very stable - no wonder they have to be able to withstand a lot. Thus, they are also wonderful for the construction of raised beds, especially since you then actually do not have much to do. Pallet frames are available in a variety of standardized sizes, such as 600 by 800 millimeters, 800 by 1200 millimeters, or 1000 by 1200 millimeters. In addition, you can also have individual frames made in the desired height and length at the corresponding specialist dealers.

To build a raised bed from a pallet frame

A raised bed made of pallet frame is really very easy to build: Just put so many frames on each other until you have reached the desired height. The bottom frame is either placed directly on the ground, whereby in case of earth contact, a wire mesh to protect against vole and other pests and a fleece to protect against weeds penetrating from below makes sense. Of course you can also build a frame with floor, which is recommended for setting up on a balcony or terrace. The individual frames should be firmly connected together (for example by screwed on angles) so that the raised bed does not simply fall apart one day. Just as obligatory is the lining with nap or pond liner, because the contact with the moist soil filling brings the inherently robust wood of the frame quickly to rotten.

Fill a pallet frame raised bed properly and plant

The prefabricated raised bed made of pallet frames can be filled and planted just like any other raised bed. You can use it as a compost raised bed, but you can also fill in good, mixed with compost or manure, potting soil - depending on what materials you have at hand and which plants to grow on your raised bed. However, if the raised bed is rather small (for example built for a balcony), you should do without the usual layered structure - the area is simply too small for the decomposition process to take place inside.

Tips

If you want to make it even easier, take finished boxes instead. Even traditional wine, fruit or bakery boxes are excellently suited as planters for tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, peas, beans, strawberries or herbs. On the bottom you can also screw on rollers, then the new planters become mobile and can always be pushed straight to where the sun is shining.
