Avoid crop failures by tying raspberries

Most raspberry varieties make long, slender rods. Unfortunately, the shoots tend to tend to the ground in rain, wind or too many fruits. By tying up you support the supporting rods and give them hold.

Pull raspberries on the scaffolding

If you want to plant raspberries in the garden, you will need to install scaffolding for most varieties. Attach the rods to them so they do not tip over. This gives the fruits enough light and sun.

To tie up raspberries are:

Tie rods in continuously

Once the rods have grown more than half a meter, they should be tied to the bottom of the scaffold. As the shoots get higher, attach them to the higher levels of the scaffold.

To tie the rods use either small wires or weatherproof garden cord.

The trade also has special braces for ligatures. They do not tie up the shoots and are very easy to attach and remove.

Tie up summer raspberries

Summer raspberries are stabilized with a V-frame. This framework form offers a special advantage. On one side of the "V" you bind the one-year shoots and on the other hand the two-year shoots.

As the fruits of summer raspberries grow on the two-year shoots, this measure facilitates the harvest. You just have to pick raspberries on one side.

After the harvest, cut off the two-year shoots. You can not go wrong, because the one-year rods are on the other side.

Support autumn raspberries by scaffolding

Autumn raspberries are generally not as high as summer raspberries. With them, it may be sufficient to stick brushwood or bamboo sticks between the plants to support them.

Low autumn raspberry varieties or two-timers can do without supports. They are therefore also well suited to pull them on the balcony in the pot.

Tips & Tricks

If possible you should avoid washing raspberries. The delicate fruits can burst and lose a lot of aroma. By tying the rods you can avoid that the raspberries come into contact with the ground. You do not have to be cleaned extra.
