Plant dogwood properly

Dogwood or Cornus are a group of shrubs or even small trees that are found throughout the northern hemisphere of the earth. Although all species come from temperate climates, their requirements for location and planting are quite different. Some dogwoods are quite shadow-tolerant, others not.

At which location does the dogwood feel particularly well?

In general, the dogwood prefers a sunny to slightly shaded location, but some species are also satisfied with a shady spot. Shadow tolerant are, for example, the pagoda dogwood (Cornus controversus) and the ground covering carpet dogwood (Cornus canadensis).

In which substrate should you put the dogwood?

In terms of substrate selection, it is a bit more difficult. Some species prefer a sour bog floor, while others need a calcareous substrate.

When is the best planting time for dogwood?

Dogwood should be planted in the spring or fall.

Which planting distance should be kept?

Since most species can grow up to 10 meters high and several meters wide, dogwood should be planted with as much space as possible. For a hedge planting a distance of one meter is recommended.

Some species of dogwood already bloom before the shoot in the months of March to April, others only between May and June.

How can dogwood be multiplied?

Dogwoods can be propagated either by seed or by cuttings, with some patience in the first years: the young woody shrubs grow very slowly.
